Using collaborative screens to bring learning to life

Written by Emma Morgan, Industry Marketing Manager at FUJIFILM Business Innovation Australia.

Education is ever changing. Keeping students engaged in the classroom is a constant challenge.  A 2017 report by the Grattan Institute found that 40% of students in Australian schools are disengaged from learning and falling behind their peers[1]. Student engagement is driven by a lot of factors. School culture, student disposition, parent engagement and access to resources all play a part.

Technology and engagement

Increasing technology in the classroom has meant that content can be adapted in new and creative ways to keep students interested. In the morning students could go on a virtual trip to the rainforest using VR. Then they could use screens to collaborate with a school near a rainforest. And in the afternoon write a report on the experience using their computer.

Technology is a key ingredient in sparking a passion for learning amongst digital natives. Their experiences mean they expect to be able to interact with technology in certain ways. I've heard many stories of young children who expect any screen to be a touch screen and try to navigate the TV as if it was a tablet.

The benefits of interactive display screens

Technologies such as interactive screens, make it easier for teachers to keep digital native students engaged in the classroom. Through interactive screens, teachers can access apps that allow for a collaborative and creative approach to learning.

Along with engagement, collaborative screens have other benefits including:

  • Facilitation of remote learning – enabling students who cannot attend the classroom to still participate in lessons and collaborate with peers.
  • Multi-touch displays - allowing multiple students to use the screen at the same time
  • Access to your favourite classroom apps and software – fostering class participation and creativity.
